Going full on "Monk Mode" for a mega-marathon
Go Condition Ambassador Anthony Kunkel is training for a 50 mile trail race record this fall. Here he gives his three keys to nailing marathon training.
1. To Bed & To Rise at the same time...every day
Go Condition Ambassador Anthony Kunkel is training for an attempt on the world 50 mile record this fall in a trail race in Hennepin IL. To prepare he has decamped to Durango CO for altitude training and is going full on monk mode for 12 weeks. "Monk Mode" means removing variables to remove the need for will power and discipline. Variable #1...Sleep and plenty of it. Ensured by a consistent bed time and rising time every day
2. Eat the same thing at the same time...every day
Anthony needs to train his body to optimize fat metabolism and that means controlling carbs and eating plenty of fats and plenty of calories. How to keep that healthy and on point? Amongst other things Sardines...and everything else eaten in the same order, at the same time every day.
3. Run the same trail at the same time...every day
Phase 1 of training was 3 weeks running 100 miles per week. Now in phase 2 that is upped to 120 miles per week for the next three weeks. All run on the same trail at the same time every day...with the same sleep in the bag and the same calories on board.
"Monk Mode" is the way to recognizable gains, enabling him to feel and register his improvement against the same benchmark. Daily.
