In your 40’s, 50’s, or 60’s and feeling the aches and pains of age?

If you’re like me, something changed in my 40’s. Mentally I was still young and strong, but after a hard day skiing or a busy day of working in the yard, my body was sore. And getting out of bed the next day was even worse. The stiff joints and muscle soreness would take a couple of days to subside. The fact of the matter was I just didn’t recover like I used to.

Now I certainly wasn’t in peak physical condition. Working a regular desk job in front of a computer and having a busy life with kids and piano lessons and soccer practice, we weren’t always making the best food choices and it wasn’t always easy to prioritize exercise. But I am still on the go. During the winter I go skiing with the kids almost every week and in the summer, we hike and backpack and ride bikes and work in the yard and I hit the gym a few times each week. But my ability to recover from those activities just wasn’t what it used to be.

But after my few difficult runs, my legs were usually shot and I was more or less done for the day. That’s when I’d take it easy and ski with whichever of my kids was the worst skier that day just so that I could keep up. And without exception, I really felt the soreness and stiffness the next morning when I tried to get out of bed!

I didn’t know anything would be different, so I still did my easy runs like normal. Then I hit the hard runs… and just kept going. In fact, I felt great all night.
